Welcome to the health services of the Rumson School District. Our team provides services to the school community, including routine screenings, disease prevention, medication administration, emergency care and health counseling. We work as part of the educational team to promote the overall health and well-being of the children.

Routine Health Screenings Provided by our Nurses
- Height and Weight, all students yearly
- Vision Screening, yearly for grades pre-K, K, 2, 4, 6, 8
- Hearing Screening, preK-K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8
- Scoliosis Screening, biannual after age 10
- Blood Pressure Screening, all students yearly
Requirements for Students Entering the District
All students entering the district must provide documentation of a physical exam within the 365 days preceding their entry. The documentation must include any modifications necessary for full participation in the school program.
New students must also provide proof of immunization. See the immunization page for more information.
Mantoux testing for tuberculosis may be required. Contact the school nurse for more information.
Physical Examinations
Parents are encouraged to have family doctors perform physical examinations in preference to the school doctor. The family doctor is more familiar with children’s health histories and is in a better position to recommend immediate steps for any remedial care. In the rare situation when a student does not have a primary health care provider, contact the school nurse to make arrangements.
The Rumson School District cares about the health of your children. Although it is not required, the district strongly encourages parents to have their children examined by a health care provider at three developmental stages: early childhood (up to grade 3), pre-adolescence (grades 4 to 6), and adolescence (grades 7 to 8).
Health Regulations
The following health regulations apply to the public schools in Rumson.

Children with a contagious disease may not attend school until all signs of the disease have disappeared.

The school nurse may exclude a child who appears ill in school and may require a note from the physician before the child is re-admitted to school.

It is the policy of Rumson schools that administration of medication to a pupil during school hours will be permitted only when failure to take such medicine would jeopardize the health of the pupil, or the pupil would not be able to attend school if the medicine were not made available to him/her during school hours. Before any medication may be administered to or by any pupil during school hours, the board shall require the written request of the parent/ guardian which shall give permission for such administration and relieve the board and its employees of liability. In addition, the board requires written order of the prescribing physician which shall include: the purpose of the medication; the dosage; the time at which or the special circumstances under which medication shall be administered; the length of time for which medication is prescribed and the possible side effects.

A child may be excused from physical education for three days with a note from a parent. If the time is extended beyond three days, a note from the family physician is required.
